Discussion
Consider the following pairs of engine and defining feature:
Ramjet - No compressor or turbine
Scramjet - Combustion in supersonic flow
Rocket - Carries its own oxidiser
Turbofan - No compressor
How many of the pairs given above are correctly matched?
Answer: A
Correct answer: Only three
Ramjet, scramjet and rocket are all correctly characterised. The fourth is wrong: a turbofan certainly has a compressor, along with a fan and a turbine driving both. It is the ramjet that has neither compressor nor turbine, relying on ram compression alone - which is why it cannot produce thrust at rest.
