Discussion
Efficiency contributions for two engines.
| Engine | Thermal efficiency | Propulsive efficiency | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turbojet at Mach 0.8 | 0.45 | 0.55 | 0.248 |
| High bypass turbofan | 0.45 | 0.75 | 0.338 |
| Turboprop at 300 kt | 0.40 | 0.85 | 0.340 |
| Turbojet at Mach 2.0 | 0.50 | 0.80 | 0.400 |
What do the second and third rows together show?
Answer: D
The turboprop has the poorer core yet matches the turbofan overall, because it accelerates far more air far more gently. Since the two efficiencies multiply, an advantage in one can genuinely compensate for a deficit in the other.
