Consider the following statements about mechanical pulping.
1. It gives a yield well above that of chemical pulping.
2. It consumes a great deal of electrical energy.
3. It produces a stronger pulp than the kraft process.
Answer: A
The first two are correct. The third is wrong, since mechanical action shortens and damages the fibres while kraft leaves them long and strong, which is exactly why kraft dominates packaging grades. Energy consumption is the other drawback of the route.
