Reduction of the amount of sentence without changing its character is known as :
Answer: B
It is called remission.
Remission reduces the amount of a sentence without changing its character: a two-year sentence of rigorous imprisonment cut to one year remains rigorous imprisonment.
Commutation substitutes a lighter kind of punishment, such as death to life imprisonment, so it does change the character. Reprieve is a temporary stay of execution, usually of a death sentence, and respite is the award of a lesser sentence because of a special fact such as pregnancy. All four are powers under Articles 72 and 161.
