Discussion
Five children – P, Q, R, S and T – live on five different floors (numbered 1 to 5) of a building but not necessarily in the same order. Each one of them has got different marks in a test – 35, 56, 72, 81 and 93 – but not necessarily in the same order. R lives on an even numbered floor but not floor number 2 and did not get 72 marks. S lives on the floor immediately above Q. Two children live between R and the one who got 93 marks. One child lives between the ones who got 93 and 56 marks, respectively. Q got the highest marks and T got 35 marks. Who got 72 marks?
Answer: B
S got 72 marks. R lives on an even floor that is not 2, so R is on floor 4. Two children live between R and the one with 93 marks, so the 93-mark child is on floor 1. One child lives between the 93-mark and 56-mark children, so 56 marks belong to the child on floor 3. Q got the highest marks, 93, so Q is on floor 1, and S lives immediately above Q on floor 2. T got 35 marks.
The remaining children P and T take floors 3 and 5. The 56-mark child is on floor 3 and T has 35, so T is on floor 5 and P is on floor 3 with 56. R on floor 4 did not get 72, so R has 81, and the last mark, 72, goes to S. P, T and Q hold 56, 35 and 93, so options A, C and D are wrong.
