A kiln substitutes 30 per cent of its thermal energy with alternative fuel. If total input is 12 million megajoules a day, how much comes from alternative fuel?
Answer: A
Thirty per cent of 12 million is 3.6 million megajoules. Substitution rates of this order are routine in Europe and considerably higher at some individual plants. A few kilns run almost entirely on wastes and secondary fuels.
