The discriminant of the quadratic equation x2 - 8x + 4 = 0 is
Answer: B
The discriminant is 48.
For ax2 + bx + c = 0 the discriminant is b2 − 4ac. Here a = 1, b = −8, c = 4:
\[ D = (-8)^{2} - 4(1)(4) = 64 - 16 = 48 \]
64 is b2 alone, forgetting to subtract 4ac, and 32 comes from subtracting 2 × 16 instead of 16; 24 has no such source. Since D is positive and not a perfect square, the equation has two distinct irrational roots, 4 ± 2√3.
