Seats for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in a school are in the ratio 5 : 6 : 8. There is a proposal to increase these seats by 40%, 50% and 60% respectively. What will be the ratio of increased seats?
Answer: C
The ratio of the increased seats is 70 : 90 : 128. The seats in the ratio 5 : 6 : 8 are increased by 40%, 50% and 60%, so they become \[ 5\times 1.4 = 7,\quad 6\times 1.5 = 9 \] \[ 8\times 1.6 = 12.8 \] The new ratio is 7 : 9 : 12.8, and multiplying by 10 to remove the decimal gives 70 : 90 : 128. The other options do not equal 7 : 9 : 12.8 in any scale, so they cannot be the ratio of the increased seats.
Dividing 70 : 90 : 128 by 10 gives 7 : 9 : 12.8, so the ratio and the option are the same; the 10 only clears the decimal.
