What brought the three boys together ?

The boys were brought together by their spirit of adventure.
The passage does not state a reason in so many words. It says of Anil and Somi that, though different in temperament, they shared 'a sense of fun and an instinct for adventure', and the story is of Rusty finding the pool and the three making it their own. Adventure is the shared trait the passage names, so it is the best-supported answer, and it is the answer the key accepts.
Swimming is what they do at the pool, not what is said to bring them together. 'Earnest attitudes' refers only to the pledge and 'childhood mischiefs' is never mentioned.
