Why was Lata frowning ?
Answer: A
The answer is because she had not done well in the examination.
Lata stands outside the hall with ink on her finger, frowns at it and is 'close to tears'. The passage then says she sat down 'to collect herself' and dreads the 'hundred questions about how well she had done' waiting at home. Her distress is about how the paper went.
Nothing in the passage mentions a quarrel with a friend or a scolding from her parents, and the other students are standing outside the same hall after the English paper, so she did take the examination.
