What was the condition of the mother ?
Answer: A
The mother was in acute pain.
She 'twisted through and through, groaning on a mat' after the scorpion bit her toe. Twisting and groaning are signs of severe pain, and the poison is said to lose its sting only after twenty hours.
High fever is never mentioned. She had not recovered while the poem is happening, and 'hale and hearty' is the opposite of her state. The lines about her recovery come at the end, after the hours of suffering.
