In the Mauryan period, what principal factor led to India opening up to the outside world ?
Answer: A
The factor was the spread of Buddhism.
The passage says India became an important international centre in Ashoka's time 'chiefly because of the rapid spread of Buddhism'. The word 'chiefly' marks the principal factor.
Ambassadors coming to the court are mentioned as earlier contacts under Bindusara, not as the principal reason. Exports and intellectual attainments are not given as causes.
