Before Ashoka, the Mauryan empire excluded __________.
Answer: D
Before Ashoka the empire excluded the South-East and a part of the South.
The second paragraph says the empire already 'included the greater part of India and extended right into Central Asia. Only the South-East and a part of the South were beyond its sway.'
The North-West was Ashoka's own province before he became emperor, and the North is in the greater part. The East, Kalinga on the east coast, was added by Ashoka's conquest.
