What task was the uncle supposed to perform that day?

The uncle was to frame a photograph.
The first paragraph says 'The main job for the day was to mount and frame the photograph', and that the uncle carried it in his hand, enclosed in an old envelope.
Playing cards is what his friend suggests and what the uncle only talks about. Going round the city is where they walk, not the task. The engineer friend is met by chance on the street.
