The people who visit at the onset of summer are people whom he hardly knows.
Paragraph 2 says that for nine months only his closest friends come, but when temperatures start soaring "people whom I am barely able to recognize appear at the front door". Barely able to recognize means he hardly knows them.
His closest friends come in the other nine months, and the passage does not describe the summer visitors as school mates or colleagues.
