Who is referred to as ‘the tumultuous barbarian’?
Answer: B
The tumultuous barbarians are Alexander and his soldiers. In the passage the barbarians are the ones who poured into the Senate house after taking Rome and found the Fathers sitting silent and unmoved, so the phrase describes the conquering force led by Alexander.
The man relaxing in the wayside meadow stands for the idler, and the passage describes him as cool, not as tumultuous. Diogenes and the other senate members are the Fathers who sit unmoved; they are the ones who disregard the conquerors, not the conquerors themselves. The physicist belongs to a different example about people who condemn what they do not practise. Alexander and his soldiers are the answer.
