Which countries are China's main strategic rivals ?
Answer: D
China's main strategic rivals are the USA and Japan.
The second paragraph says India's pursuit of deeper military engagement 'with the former's main strategic rivals – the U.S. and Japan' was seen by China as a serious challenge to its future security, where 'the former' is China.
India is the country that China objects to for dealing with those rivals, not one of the rivals the passage names, so any option pairing India with Pakistan, the USA or Russia is wrong.
