The paragraph runs 3 – 5 – 1 – 6 – 4 – 2:
- 3 gives the occasion: Christmas, and John's wish to surprise Jane.
- 5 gives his choice of gift, an ivory clip for her long hair.
- 1 gives the obstacle - he had no money.
- 6 gives his solution with therefore - he sold his watch.
- 4 gives Jane's reaction on seeing it.
- 2 gives the reason for her tears, explained after a while.
The irony only lands in this order: the clip is useless because Jane has sold her hair, and the chain is useless because John has sold his watch.
