The paragraph runs 4 – 1 – 3 – 5 – 2:
- 4 makes the claim: we listen a great deal and listen badly.
- 1 supports it - a study to this effect refers to that claim.
- 3 introduces the three approaches to listening.
- 5 says what each approach is for.
- 2 closes with however: good listeners use all three and so listen better.
A study to this effect in 1 has nothing to refer to unless 4 comes first, and however in 2 answers the poor efficiency reported in 1.
