Biomass gasification is considered to be one of the sustainable solutions to the power crisis in India. In this context, which of the following statements is/are correct ?
(i) Coconut shells, groundnut shells and rice husk can be used in biomass gasification.
(ii) The combustible gases generated from biomass gasification consist of hydrogen and carbon dioxide only.
(iii) The combustible gases generated from biomass gasification can be used for direct heat generation but not in internal combustion engines.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
Answer: A
Only statement (i) is correct, so the answer is (i) only.
Biomass gasification partially burns agricultural residues such as coconut shells, groundnut shells and rice husk in limited air to produce a combustible 'producer gas' (i).
Statement (ii) is wrong: the gas is mainly carbon monoxide and hydrogen, with some methane, diluted by nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is not even combustible. Statement (iii) is wrong too: after cleaning and cooling, producer gas can run internal combustion engines, either gas engines alone or diesel engines in dual-fuel mode, which is how small gasifier power plants generate electricity. So every option containing (ii) or (iii) is wrong.
