Discussion
Match each ideal reactor with its residence time distribution.
List I
A. Plug flow
B. Stirred tank
C. Several tanks in series
D. Laminar flow tube
List II
1. a peak that narrows as tanks are added
2. a spike at the mean residence time
3. a curve with a long tail from the slow wall region
4. an exponential decay from time zero
Answer: B
The distribution is the fingerprint of the flow pattern, and comparing a measured curve against these four is how a real reactor is diagnosed. The laminar case is the one most often overlooked. Each pattern has its own signature.
