Consider the following statements :
(1) Article 13(2) provides reservations to backward classes.
(2) Article 15(4) and 16(4) provide reservations for OBCs.
(3) Article 15(6) and 16(6) provide reservations to EWS of society.
(4) Article 14 provides reservation for SC & STs.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
Answer: B
The correct statements are (2) and (3) only.
Article 15(4) allows special provisions for socially and educationally backward classes and for SCs and STs, and Article 16(4) allows reservation in appointments for backward classes. These are the basis of OBC reservation. Articles 15(6) and 16(6), added by the 103rd Amendment in 2019, allow up to 10 percent reservation for the economically weaker sections.
Statement 1 is wrong because Article 13(2) bars the State from making laws that take away fundamental rights and has nothing to do with reservation. Statement 4 is wrong because Article 14 guarantees equality before the law and does not itself provide reservation.
