In an arid environment, winds of similar intensity blow in nearly opposite directions in alternate seasons. Which dune type is most likely to form in such an environment?
Answer: C
The dune most likely to form is the seif.
Seifs are long, sharp-crested linear (longitudinal) dunes. They grow where winds of similar strength blow from two directions at an angle to each other, often alternating with the season: each wind builds the dune on its lee side in turn, so the crest stays fixed and lengthens parallel to the mean wind direction.
Barchans (barkhans) and lunate dunes are the same crescent form, built by one dominant wind blowing over limited sand, with horns pointing downwind. Transverse dunes are long ridges at right angles to a single dominant wind where sand is plentiful. None of these needs a reversing wind.
