a. When I finally climbed off the boat, I fell nearly into the harbour.
b. My left leg was soaked sank in the sea.
c. One of my shoes sank in the sea.
d. I stumbled and took a splinter in my knee.
Answer: D
a and b are incorrect.
Sentence a misplaces nearly: it should be I nearly fell into the harbour, since it is the falling that almost happened. Sentence b runs two verbs together - was soaked sank - with nothing to join them.
