Discussion
Given below are four jumbled sentences. Select the option that gives their correct order forming a meaningful and coherent paragraph.
A. At the outset we had difficulties in understanding one another as he spoke no German, and I no Italian.
B. We both knew only a minimum of English, so we conversed, with the help of a friend, in halting French.
C. My future companion was named Marchese and was in outward appearance a typical Italian.
D. He was something over forty years of age, slim of figure, with agreeable manners, and distinctly well dressed; I was particularly impressed by his physique.
Answer: C
The correct order is CDAB. Sentence C has to open the paragraph because it introduces the person being described, Marchese, the future companion, which the other sentences refer to as he. Sentence D follows with his age, build, manners and dress, which describes him further. Sentence A then says that at first the two could not understand one another since he spoke no German and the narrator no Italian. Sentence B closes the thought by saying how they managed: with a minimum of English and the help of a friend, in halting French. Options that begin with D or B use he or We both before anyone has been introduced.
