In star connection of 3-phase system, the line voltage is ________ times of phase voltage.
Answer: C
In a star connection the line voltage is \(\sqrt{3}\) times the phase voltage.
Each line voltage is the phasor difference of two phase voltages that are 120° apart. The difference of two equal phasors at 120° has a magnitude of \(2V_{ph}\cos 30^{\circ} = \sqrt{3}V_{ph}\), and it leads the corresponding phase voltage by 30°. The line current, on the other hand, equals the phase current.
\(1/\sqrt{3}\) is the ratio the other way round (phase to line voltage), and \(\sqrt{2}\) relates peak and rms values, not star line and phase voltages.
