Acceptance testing checks whether the software meets the customer's needs. Alpha testing is done by users at the developer's site under the developer's watch, and beta testing by real users in their own environment before general release.
Unit, integration and system testing are carried out by the development team to check modules, their interfaces and the whole system against the specification, before users take part.
