Number of signals observed in the 1H NMR spectrum is p-tolualdehyde is :
Answer: B
p-Tolualdehyde shows 4 signals.
In 4-methylbenzaldehyde, CH3C6H4CHO, the para substitution gives the molecule a mirror plane through the CHO and CH3 groups. The protons fall into four sets:
- the aldehyde H, near δ 9.9;
- the two ring H ortho to CHO, near δ 7.8;
- the two ring H ortho to CH3, near δ 7.3;
- the methyl H, near δ 2.4.
3 would treat all four ring protons as equivalent, which they are not since the two substituents differ. 5 or 6 would split protons that the symmetry makes equivalent.
