Find the correctly spelt word:
Answer: D
Correct answer: Colleague
The correct spelling is colleague - a double l and the ending -eague. Both features come from French. The ending -ague belongs to a small family of French borrowings: league, plague, vague, fatigue and intrigue all end with a silent ue after the g, which is there to keep the g hard. The double l comes from the Latin collega, built on com-, with, and legare, to depute - someone deputed alongside you. The word is worth keeping apart from college, which has a single e and a different ending, and from collegiate, which comes from the same root but follows the college pattern. The abstract noun is collegiality.
