Correct answer: Acquaintance
The correct spelling is acquaintance - note the cq and the ending -ance. The c before the q is the feature most often dropped, because it makes no separate sound. It is there because the Latin prefix ad- assimilated before the following consonant, and the same doubling appears in acquire, acquit, acquiesce and acquisition. Learning that group together secures all of them. The second half comes from the Latin cognoscere, to know, by way of Old French - hence the sequence quaint, which is unrelated to the modern word of that spelling. The ending -ance rather than -ence has no rule behind it and must be memorised, along with maintenance, appearance, resistance and perseverance.
