Syphilis disease is caused by:
Answer: B
Syphilis is caused by the spirochaete Treponema pallidum.
T. pallidum is a thin, tightly coiled spirochaete, too slender to see with ordinary staining, so it is seen by dark-ground microscopy. Syphilis is mainly sexually transmitted and passes through primary (chancre), secondary and tertiary stages; it can also be passed from mother to fetus.
Salmonella causes typhoid and food poisoning, Neisseria meningitidis causes meningococcal meningitis, and Shigella causes bacillary dysentery. None of them is a spirochaete.
