In the Indian context, consider the following statements regarding marriage :
1. Under the Uniform Civil Code implemented in Uttarakhand, the minimum age of marriage for girls has been raised from 18 to 21 years.
2. The subject of marriage is included in the State List of the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
Answer: D
Neither statement is correct, so the answer is Neither 1 nor 2.
The Uniform Civil Code adopted in Uttarakhand did not raise the marriage age for women: it keeps the minimum age at 21 years for men and 18 years for women, the same as the existing general law.
Marriage and divorce are in the Concurrent List (Entry 5 of List III of the Seventh Schedule), not the State List. That is why both Parliament and a state legislature can make laws on the subject, as Uttarakhand did with its code.
