Discussion
Arrange these events after a gust raises an aeroplane's nose, for a statically stable aircraft:
1. Angle of attack increases above the trim value
2. Wing and tail lift both increase
3. The tail's long arm produces a net nose down moment
4. The nose falls back towards the trim attitude
5. The aeroplane oscillates about trim, damping over time
Select the correct sequence.
Answer: C
The first four steps are static stability, concerning only the direction of the initial response. Whether the final oscillation damps out is a dynamic question governed by pitch damping rather than by the restoring moment alone.
