Discussion
Horizontal surface arrangements compared.
| Configuration | Surface position | Trim load | Static margin available |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional tail | Behind the wing | Usually downward | Generous |
| Canard | Ahead of the wing | Upward | Moderate |
| Tailless | None separate | Wing reflex | Small |
| T-tail | Behind and above | Usually downward | Generous |
Which configuration avoids the trim drag of a download?
Answer: A
A conventional tail balances the wing's nose down moment with a download the wing must offset. A canard's foreplane carries part of the weight instead, which removes that particular penalty at the cost of other difficulties.
