Discussion
Consider the following statements about the boom idealisation:
1. Booms carry direct stress and skin carries shear.
2. Part of each skin panel's area is credited to the adjacent booms.
3. The skin's direct-stress contribution is discarded entirely.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: B
The first two describe the method. The third contradicts the second: the skin's contribution is not thrown away but lumped into the booms, which is what makes the idealised section carry the same direct load as the real one.
