Discussion
Consider the following statements about boundary conditions:
1. Over-constraining attracts artificial load into the supports.
2. Under-constraining leaves rigid body modes.
3. Fixing as many degrees of freedom as possible is the safe choice.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 describe the two errors that lie either side of correct restraint. Statement 3 is the dangerous one: fixing everything removes the rigid body modes but also prevents the structure deforming as it really would, so load is attracted into the artificial supports and the stresses near them are wrong. The correct number of constraints is the number the real support arrangement provides, and no more.
