Consider the following statements about model checking:
1. Summing the reactions against the applied load is a useful check.
2. A hand calculation can catch gross errors of units or sign.
3. Agreement with a hand calculation proves the model is exactly right.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: B
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 are the two standard checks and both are worth doing. Statement 3 claims far too much: agreement with a hand calculation shows only that the model is not grossly wrong in the respect the hand calculation covers. Both may share the same misunderstanding of the load path or the same error in the input, and neither addresses whether the idealisation itself was appropriate.
