Discussion
Consider the following statements about symmetry in modelling:
1. Both structure and loading must be symmetric to use a half model.
2. A quarter model receives a quarter of the total load.
3. Symmetry may be applied to a symmetric structure under any loading.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: D
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 are correct. Statement 3 states the condition too loosely and is the usual error: symmetry of the structure is not enough, the loading must be symmetric too. A symmetric structure under an antisymmetric load can be modelled on half the geometry, but with antisymmetric boundary conditions, and under a general load it cannot be reduced at all without decomposing the load first.
