Choose the correct word to complete the sentence :
A fleet of ships ________ through this canal every day.
Answer: D
The correct word is passes: A fleet of ships passes through this canal every day.
The subject is a fleet, a collective noun treated here as a single unit, so it takes a singular verb. Of ships only describes the fleet and does not change the number of the subject. The habitual action (every day) needs the simple present tense, so the verb is passes.
Pass is plural and would agree with ships, the wrong word. Passing and crossing are participles and cannot stand as the main verb without a helping verb such as is.
