Discussion
Consider the following statements about batch and continuous fermentation.
1. Batch operation is the norm for antibiotics and other high value products.
2. Continuous operation risks contamination and strain degeneration over time.
3. Continuous fermentation always gives a higher product concentration.
Answer: B
The first two are correct and explain why batch persists. The third is wrong, since a continuous fermenter typically runs at a lower product concentration in exchange for a higher productivity. Volumetric productivity is the figure it improves.
