Which of the following machine can be used for increasing the power factor?

A synchronous motor can be used for increasing the power factor. When it is over-excited it draws a leading current, so it can be run on no load as a synchronous condenser to improve the power factor of a plant with lagging loads.
A DC shunt motor, a single phase induction motor and a stepper motor do not draw leading current and cannot improve the power factor of a system. So the first option is correct.
