Which of the following words mean the same as 'fosters' (para 3) ?
Answer: B
'Fosters' means encourages.
In 'a digital economy that fosters the application of new technologies', 'fosters' means promotes or helps something grow, which is to encourage it. The same sentence adds that such an economy 'allows businesses and entrepreneurs to thrive'.
'Squelches' and 'stifles' mean to suppress, the opposite of what the sentence wants. 'Serves' is a different idea, to work for or provide for, and does not carry the sense of helping something develop.
