Choose the correct word to fill in the blank in the sentence given :
If he had run fast, he ________ have won the race.
Answer: B
The correct word is would: If he had run fast, he would have won the race.
This is a third conditional, describing an unreal situation in the past. Its pattern is if + past perfect (had run) in the condition, and would have + past participle (would have won) in the result.
Must have won expresses a confident deduction, not a hypothetical result. Had have and was have are ungrammatical, since have after an auxiliary needs a modal such as would, could or might.
