Which area on the diagram is the convective available potential energy?
Answer: C
The positive area where the parcel is warmer than the environment, measured between the level of free convection and the equilibrium level, gives the available energy in joules per kilogram. Because the diagram preserves areas the measurement is direct. Values above about 2000 indicate potential for severe convection, though the realised updraught is always weaker than the parcel value. A single measurement chosen to respond to the one asymmetry beats several that respond to shared behaviour.
