The effective method is giving them opportunities to brainstorm and make intuitive guesses.
Problem-solving grows when children generate many possible ideas, make and test hunches, and reason about which ones work. Brainstorming encourages divergent thinking and intuitive guessing, and testing those guesses builds strategies children can carry to new problems.
Discouraging independent thinking, avoiding difficult problems and handing children ready-made solutions all take away the very practice of solving problems that builds the skill.
