A teacher wants to help her students develop metacognitive skills. Which of the following strategies would be most effective ?
Answer: B
The most effective strategy is encouraging students to reflect on their own learning and evaluate their progress.
Metacognition is thinking about one's own thinking: planning how to approach a task, monitoring understanding while doing it, and evaluating afterwards what worked. Regular reflection, through learning journals, self-assessment, or questions such as 'How did I solve this? What confused me?', builds exactly these skills.
Frequent grades place the judgement outside the learner. Memorising and repeating textbook content trains recall, not awareness of one's own learning, and detailed prescriptive instructions for every task remove the need for students to plan and monitor themselves.
