Ten year old Kakuli is struggling with a difficult math problem. What can her teacher do to enhance her problem-solving skills ?
Answer: D
The teacher should encourage her to keep trying and offer scaffolding when needed.
Problem-solving skill grows when a learner works through difficulty with support: hints, guiding questions or a simpler related problem, withdrawn as she gains competence. Encouragement keeps her persisting.
Punishment creates fear and does nothing for the skill. Giving the solution removes the thinking she needs to do, and telling her to skip the problem avoids the learning altogether.
