Thresher performance at four cylinder peripheral speeds.
| Speed (m/s) | Threshing efficiency | Grain damage (per cent) |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | 0.941 | 0.6 |
| 16 | 0.978 | 1.2 |
| 20 | 0.993 | 2.9 |
| 24 | 0.997 | 5.8 |
Which speed offers the best compromise for a milling crop?
Answer: A
Correct answer: 16 m/s
Read the two columns together. Going from 16 to 20 m/s buys only 1.5 points of threshing efficiency - from 0.978 to 0.993 - while damage rises from 1.2 to 2.9 per cent, more than doubling.
At 12 m/s the threshing is too poor at 0.941, leaving nearly 6 per cent of the grain on the heads. So 16 m/s is the compromise: nearly all the grain detached, and damage still close to one per cent. Broken grain is unsaleable at full price, so it is the column that governs.
