A person travelled a certain distance by car at the speed of 60 km/h and returned at a speed of 40 km/h. The whole journey took 6 hours. What distance did he travel?
Answer: C
He travelled 144 km. Let the one-way distance be d. The time to go is d/60 and the time to return is d/40, and the total is 6 hours. \[\frac{d}{60} + \frac{d}{40} = 6\] \[\frac{5d}{120} = 6\] \[d = 144\] So the distance is 144 km. The option 150 km would give a total time of 6.25 hours, 140 km would give 5.83 hours, and 200 km would give 8.33 hours, so none of them agrees with the total of 6 hours.
