The unit step response of a first-order system exhibits :
Answer: B
The unit step response of a first-order system is an exponential rise.
For \(G(s) = K/(\tau s + 1)\) and a unit step input, the output is
\[ c(t) = K\,(1 - e^{-t/\tau}) \]
It starts at zero, rises fastest at first and approaches the final value \(K\) without overshoot, reaching 63.2% of it after one time constant and about 98% after four.
Oscillations need complex poles, which only a second- or higher-order system can have. An exponential decay is the first-order system's impulse response (or its natural response), not its step response, and a sine wave would be the steady response to a sinusoidal input.
